“Doomsday: Mankind Has An Expiration Day”, the name of a new movie and “How unlikely is a doomsday catastrophe? “, a physics paper, are two good headers affirming and refuting Doomsday, see here and here respectively. Now let’s see the actual story of the controversy..
.
.
I live in a kibbutz (Israel), in the Jordan Valley, a part of the rift valley running from Syria, Israel and Jordan through East Africa, one of the most dangerous potential earthquake regions. If this is not enough to chill my spine, then about 50 km from my kibbutz is another kibbutz, Megido, the place where according to the christian theology, will take place, I quote, ..”[the] final battle (or Campaign) between God and the forces of righteousness, and Satan.. also known as the Devil”… more here. Add all this together with the “volcanic eruption” of events in this region and you have a recipes for a future apocalypse in the Middle East.
.
Well, that was my firm belief until today (April 1, 2008). Today I found out, to my great relief, that I was totally wrong. Why? Because there is another place where the real imminent DoomsDay, Apocalypse, or whatever it is, will take place, and this place is CERN, located along the (peaceful) French-Swiss border near the Swiss capital Geneva, the world’s largest particle-physics laboratory, see here.
And why is that true? Look at the Herald Tribune (Eur) headline “Black Hole Eats Earth”. I quote ..”..two men pursuing a lawsuit in a court in Hawaii” ..”think a giant particle accelerator that will begin smashing protons together outside Geneva this summer might produce a black hole that will spell the end of the Earth – and maybe the universe.”…not very assuring, see here.
.
To be more precise, what is so alarming about the perspective of ..” recreat[ing] energies and conditions last seen a trillionth of a second after the Big Bang. Researchers will sift the debris from these primordial recreations for clues to the nature of mass and new forces and symmetries of nature.”..And who is the carnivore culprit, I quote,…”micro black holes produced in a terrestrial laboratory might not decay as rapidly as calculated, or might even not be prone to decay and, if unable to rapidly evaporate, they could start interacting, grow larger and potentially be disastrous to Earth itself”.., see here, or in plain English, swallow up the earth with all his inhabitants, a diet with a very large amount of proteins.
.
.
Walter Wagner and Luis Sancho, the lawyers pursuing the lawsuit in the Hawaii court states on their site, I quote,…..” [They] initiate legal action to require that CERN and the Large Hadron Collider engage in a full safety analysis for all potential theoretical hazards inadequately addressed to-date. Such hazards include theoretical miniature black holes, theoretical strangelets, deSitter Space transitions, etc. The existing “cosmic ray argument” has been proven fallacious for a variety of reasons [see risk-evaluation forum], and no existing proof of safety is currently available.”..see here.
.
A further quote..”CERN spokesman James Gillies (says) that a 2003 assessment of the doomsday scenarios was being updated with the new information. Release of that updated report – the one that Sancho and Wagner apparently have been waiting for – is “imminent,” Gillies (says) “..”Questions about the doomsday scenarios may well come up at CERN on April 6, during a public open house at the LHC. Some researchers have gotten the word to be prepared to talk about microscopic black holes and strangelets if asked, see here.
.
.
Other…”Scientists say that [micro black holes are] very unlikely – though they have done some checking just to make sure.”…”Doomsday fears have a long, if not distinguished, pedigree in the history of physics. At Los Alamos before the first nuclear bomb was tested, Emil Konopinski was given the job of calculating whether or not the explosion would set the atmosphere on fire.
Lisa Randall, a Harvard physicist whose work helped fuel the speculation about black holes at the collider, pointed out in a paper last year that black holes would not be produced at the collider after all, although other effects of so-called quantum gravity might appear.”..see here.
.
Now is all this worth the efforts? I quote from CosmicLog..” The Large Hadron Collider, or LHC, is due for startup later this year at CERN’s headquarters on the French-Swiss border. It’s expected to tackle some of the deepest questions in science: Is the foundation of modern physics right or wrong? What existed during the very first moment of the universe’s existence? Why do some particles have mass while others don’t? What is the nature of dark matter? Are there extra dimensions of space out there that we haven’t yet detected?”.. see more.
.
My own paranoic idea is that, if they exist, we shall need those extra dimensions to escape from the ‘forthcoming’ DoomsDay. But by its very definition, from Doomsday there is no escape. So this is a messy situation, even in Middle East terms..So lets do the CERN experiment..to know if we all are or not, a tasty meal for a gourmet black hole.
